What is Neck Pain?
Neck pain can be defined as an aching or soreness that is location on the neck or where the neck meets the shoulders. While the majority of neck pain is caused by strain on the muscles, it can also be a result of damage or diseases which have affected the bones and ligaments in the area. Most neck pain fades within a week if the proper steps are taken to relieve the stress on the muscles.
What are some of the Specific Causes of Neck Pain?
Neck pain can be caused by sitting in a way where the muscles and bones of the neck are in a position where they are misaligned. It can also be caused by injuries to the area from a fall, an accident or some other type of event. Mental stress can also take a toll on the muscles of the neck and cause severe pain. In rare instances, even tumors or other diseases may be responsible. Whatever the cause, some symptoms include a limited range of motion and painful stiffness.
How can Neck Pain be treated at Home?
One of the most important things to remember with neck pain is to maintain a normal daily schedule. When becoming inactive with neck pain, the muscles do not have the opportunity to move and stretch. This causes the pain continue for longer than necessary because the areas of the neck will become stiff and contract without use.
The correct way to begin stretching the neck while experiencing pain is to sit upright with arms relaxed at the side. The head should be centered and facing forward. Slowly tilt the head to right and then the left. From the center position, tilt the head up and then down. Remain in this position for 10 seconds.
Reducing the inflammation in the neck is also important. There are many anti-inflammatory medications that can be taken. Massage will help as well. Finally, apply ice or cold packs to the area for 10-15 minute periods.
How can Neck Pain be prevented?
Stretching and avoiding over-exertion are both vital to preventing neck pain. Be certain to follow all proper guidelines for lifting heavy objects or avoid the activity altogether. Also avoid over-extending the neck or moving it quickly.
How can I Prevent Neck Pain at Work?
If working in an office, most neck pain can be avoided by following good ergonomic guidelines. Be certain to have the top of the computer monitor at eye level, not below or above. Sit upright with good posture, adjusting your chair if necessary. Keep your knees level with the hips and your ankles squarely underneath the knees.
Finally, keep the keyboard and mouse within arm’s reach. Avoid stretching or awkward postures. Keep wrists loose and not tense. As often as allowable, every 30-45 minutes if possible, stand up and stretch your body.
