Tramadol Dosage
Tramadol is a prescription medication that is used to treat mild to moderate pain. Most commonly it is used for people who suffer from back pain and knee pain as well as those who have had knee surgery. Another use of Tramado is to treat skeletal muscle pain. Taking the proper dosage of Tramadol is important so as to avoid unpleasant side effects as well as lessen the chance of addiction. Tramadol is considered an opiod analgesic which means although it is not a narcotic it does bind to the different opiate receptors located throughout the body. Tramadol is a fully synthetic medication unlike narcotic medications which may be only partially synthetic. Tramadol is a very effective medication to control pain when used properly.
Because Tramadol binds to opiate receptors in the body it has the potential for abuse. Tramadol is supplied in 50mg tablets. A healthy adult with no known cardiac disease or kidney disease should begin a Tramadol regimen with 25mg by mouth once every six hours. After a couple of days the dosage can be titrated up to the normal adult dose which is 50mg every six hours for a total of 200mg daily. If necessary an adult can take up to 100mg four times a day but no more than 400mg in a 24 hour period. Tramadol should be swallowed whole and not crushed or chewed. There is an extended release form of Tramadol available and this medication is to be taken once daily.
There are no food/drug interactions with Tramadol. It can be taken with or without food. When taking Tramadol you should avoid using alcohol, tranquilizers or sedatives. The effect of Tramadol on an unborn baby is unknown and should not be taken during pregnancy without a doctor’s approval. Women who are breastfeeding should not take Tramadol unless a doctor prescribes it.
